Starry sky shooting is very concerned about the weather, you need a clear night sky, and at the same time to stay away from urban light pollution and the interference of moonlight, you can identify the moon phase in advance through the "Liking Weather" or "StarWalk" and other APP software, you can capture more details of the starry sky on a moonless night.

At the same time, you need to prepare a full-frame, high-megapixel, high-sensitivity camera, large aperture lenses, tripods, headlamps, mobile power and other equipment before you go, and this time I brought the H&Y family's magnetic mounting system as well as a soft-focus lens to shoot the starry sky.

On the night of the shoot, we drove to the top of a mountain far away from the city, due to the deviation of the navigation, there is still a distance away from our pre-selected place, and at this time there is still 2 hours before the moon goes down, so we began to observe whether we can shoot something at the location.


Under the shimmering light of the half moon, I saw a wooden walkway next to me with a shallow Milky Way above it. I pulled out my equipment and took a test shot, which felt pretty good, so the guys decided to take a few starry sky portraits here before changing locations.

We let the model stand on the trestle and take a picture with the Milky Way in the same frame. The moonlight at this time gives the portrait some complementary light effect, but the "fish and bear paw" can not be both, the background of the Milky Way is also relatively weak.


According to the shooting distance, I choose a 35mm F1.4 lens, set the aperture F1.6 ISO3200, exposure 10 seconds, and the stars are not trailing.


The aperture can be opened to the maximum when shooting the starry sky, and the fixed-focus lens has high image quality; if it is closed by one or two stops, the edge image quality will be better. One of the problems brought by the large aperture is that when focusing on the distant stars, the characters will be vignetted.


I solved this problem in a relatively simple way, that is, take a photo of the starry sky with accurate focus, and then take a photo of a portrait with accurate focus, and then use the masking tool to synthesize. When focusing, use manual focus, zoom in 10 times on the screen to check that the subject is in the best possible focus, and that the model is in the same position in both long exposure photos, and that the photo is taken without moving.


When we switched to another place to shoot, the moon had set, and the Milky Way was more obvious, I switched to a 15-35mm lens to better show the magnificence of the sky dome with the ultra-wide angle end. Ultra-wide-angle lens, people and the Milky Way are farther away from the lens, a single shot can be completed. When shooting, note that the soft light in the hands of the characters lit for about 1 second, with the cell phone screen to the ground flowers swept a little fill light.

During post-processing, open the RAW file in ACR, perform "Optics→Profile", and select "Use Profile Correction" and "Remove Color Shading". In the Detail Panel, perform "Reduce Clutter→De-clutter→Enhance" to intelligently reduce the clutter, the default value is 50, which can be increased appropriately according to the situation.



Adjust the White Balance and color tones to make the picture a little bluish and complementary to the orange soft light. Slightly increase the values of Contrast and Mist Removal to make the Milky Way more visible.
